Lecture and Sound Performance
6 pm: Lecture on urban waters by Christian Wolter from Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB)
After training as fisheries engineer at Berlin’s Humboldt University, Dr. Christian Wolter worked as fish ecologist at the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries, where he now heads the “River Revitalization” working group. In addition to numerous national and international research projects, he has been studying the fish communities of Berlin’s watercourses and the River Oder for 30 years now. His research interests include structuring factors of fish communities in large rivers, urban waters and waterways, the process-based understanding of fish community dynamics, fish-based environmental assessment, river revitalization, but also the environmental history of fish stocks and water landscapes.
6:30 pm: Sound performance with Jasmine Guffond
Jasmine Guffond is an artist and composer working at the interface of social, political and technical infrastructures. Working across music and art contexts, her practice spans live performance, recording and installation. Through the sonification of data, she addresses the potential of sound to engage with contemporary political issues and engages with listening as a situated practice of knowledge on the occasion of Marcelina Wellmer’s exhibition at Kunstbrücke am Wildenbruch. Marcelina Wellmer has invited Jasmine Guffond to sonify the data collected at the water measuring station on the Kunstbrücke site. Water measurements from the Neukölln Canal include oxygen content and saturation, vital for living organisms, water temperature, pH and conductivity; interdependent components crucial to a balanced ecosystem. The data from the first week of June over the last ten years will be used for a live music performance on June 14, together with visuals by Marcelina Wellmer. Jasmine Guffond will explore the affective, embodied, temporal and experiential affordances of sound as a means of communicating concerns about our immediate urban environment.
