Holy Shit

Alex Lebus
I am God’s Member, 2025

With the laconic statement “I am God’s Member,” Alex Lebus confronts the relation between body, language, and faith in radical directness. The phrase simultaneously signifies belonging and corporeality, submission and self-empowerment. As in other works by the artist, an “oscillating image” emerges between sacred icon and profane reality, between appropriation and resistance.

With the exhibition Holy Shit, Lebus transforms the Kunstbrücke am Wildenbruch into an atmospherically dense parcours in which the sacred and the profane, the corporeal and the spiritual meet in a multilayered dialogue. The starting point is the site’s history as a former public lavatory – a “quiet place” shaped by intimacy, vulnerability, and the act of letting go. Lebus transfers this everyday sphere into an expanded field of meaning, where religious symbolism, ritual gestures, and existential questions interweave.

Holy Shit does not conceive of the sacred as a fixed system of belief, but expands it – in the sense of a confrontation with reality – by essential dimensions. The exhibition invites us to renegotiate the relations between faith, the body, and the public sphere – poetically, confrontationally, and in manifold ambiguities.
